In 1924 speed skating was programmed as a men’s event in Chamonix as part of the winter Olympic Games. In 1960 women were allowed to participate.

The winner of a speed skating competition is determined on the total time of the two races. In each event the skaters race in pairs against the clock on a standard 400m oval ice pad.
